Implementation of Silver Zones and Lessons Learnt

Debated in Parliament on 28 Nov 2022.

Summary written by AI (learn more)

As of October 2022, 26 Silver Zones have been completed, with 24 more planned by 2025 to reach a total of 50 zones nationwide.
Design features have evolved since 2014, including the use of 3D road markings to slow traffic where physical measures aren't feasible and thinner speed strips to reduce noise.
The Land Transport Authority now engages communities earlier in the design process to incorporate local feedback, such as wider footpaths and more crossing points with larger medians for elderly rest.
The current approach emphasizes co-creation with residents to ensure Silver Zones meet the specific needs of the elderly in each area.
Progress and design improvements are based on lessons learned from earlier Silver Zone implementations to enhance safety and usability.

Ms Nadia Ahmad Samdin asked the Minister for Transport (a) whether he can provide an update on the progress of the implementation of Silver Zones; and (b) how have the designs evolved to take on lessons learnt from the Silver Zones implemented earlier.

As at 31 October 2022, LTA has completed 26 Silver Zones, and another 24 zones will be progressively completed by 2025, bringing the total number to 50.

Since the first Silver Zone was completed in 2014, LTA has been improving the design features to better meet the needs of the local community. These include using 3D road markings to encourage motorists to slow down where physical traffic calming measures are not feasible and reducing the thickness of speed regulating strips to reduce vehicular noise.

LTA has also been engaging communities upstream – at the design stage – to co-create and implement feasible suggestions, such as widening footpaths and providing more crossing points with larger centre medians, where the elderly can pause to rest when crossing the road.
