Debated in Parliament on 10 Sep 2026.
Mr Gerald Giam Yean Song asked the Minister for National Development (a) what is the estimated financial cost of the proposed undersea tunnel to Pulau Tekong; (b) what specific civilian uses are being considered for the 500 hectares of reclaimed land; and (c) what economic cost-benefit assessments have been conducted to justify an undersea tunnel over existing ferry services.
Pulau Tekong is primarily used for military training today. We are studying the siting of civilian uses on Tekong, which could include utilities and other industrial uses.
Compared to ferries, an undersea road tunnel will further enhance accessibility and open up more possibilities for both military and civilian uses on Tekong. Similar to other major infrastructure projects built by the Government, a study on the benefits and financial costs will be done before the project is implemented.
