Noise-reduction Measures for Yio Chu Kang Beacon Residents Living near MRT Tracks

Mr Yip Hon Weng asked the Minister for Transport in view of feedback from residents about disruptive train noise from MRT tracks near Yio Chu Kang Beacon (a) whether LTA will consider noise mitigation measures, such as installing noise barriers along MRT tracks in the vicinity; (b) if the location does not meet the proximity criteria for installation of noise barriers, whether LTA will reassess the criteria for installation of noise barriers in the area; and (c) what alternative support is available to affected residents for noise reduction solutions for their homes.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) works with manufacturers and operators to reduce train noise at source. This includes fitting trains with noise-dampening wheels, as well as using ballast and concrete sleepers on elevated tracks to better absorb vibration and noise.

Where Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) viaducts are located very close to residential developments, and where noise levels measured from these developments exceed the National Environment Agency's (NEA’s) guidelines, noise barriers can be installed to further reduce noise.

The MRT viaduct near Yio Chu Kang Beacon has not been identified as a location for the installation of noise barriers, as the nearest residential developments are beyond the distance where noise barriers are typically required, including Yio Chu Kang Beacon which is more than 120m from the viaduct. LTA verified in February 2025 that the average noise levels at Yio Chu Kang Beacon are within NEA guidelines.
