Debated in Parliament on 21 Apr 2023.
Ms Mariam Jaafar asked the Minister for Transport whether the Adult Monthly Travel Card can be made cheaper to encourage more people to switch to public transport as their default mode of transportation.
Public transport is heavily subsidised in Singapore and this has helped to keep fares affordable.
The Adult Monthly Travel Pass further lowers the cost for heavy users of public transport. Any reduction in the pass price will reduce revenues and need to be offset by fare increases for other commuter segments and/or other measures. The pricing of the Adult Monthly Travel Pass is regularly reviewed by the Public Transport Council as part of its annual Fare Review Exercises, balancing the affordability and financial sustainability of the public transport system.
