Extent of Threat of Global Avian Flu to Local Poultry and Egg Supply

Debated in Parliament on 6 Mar 2023.

Summary written by AI (learn more)

The global avian flu situation, specifically High Pathogenicity Avian Influenza (HPAI), poses a moderate threat to Singapore's local poultry and egg supply, as the country imports over 90% of its food and cannot be fully insulated from disease outbreaks in source countries.
The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) monitors HPAI outbreaks globally and suspends import sources with outbreaks, but has not recalled any poultry products due to HPAI in the past three years.
SFA and National Parks Board mitigate potential supply impacts through source diversification, and consumers are encouraged to be flexible with food options during disruptions.
No specific number of recalls or suspensions of poultry products was provided by the Minister, only that no recalls due to HPAI have occurred.

Ms Nadia Ahmad Samdin asked the Minister for Sustainability and the Environment (a) to what extent does the global avian flu situation pose a threat to our local poultry and egg supply; and (b) how many recalls or suspensions of poultry products has the Singapore Food Agency implemented in the past three years.

Grace Fu Hai Yien

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) and National Parks Board monitor High Pathogenicity Avian Influenza (HPAI) outbreak incidents globally and suspend import sources with outbreaks of HPAI. SFA has not recalled any poultry products due to HPAI.

Incidences of HPAI have had a significant impact in their source countries, affecting both poultry and egg production. As Singapore imports more than 90% of our food, we cannot insulate ourselves completely from the impact of disease outbreaks, such as HPAI. We mitigate the potential impact through source diversification. Consumers, too, can play their part by being flexible with food options in the event of supply disruptions.
