Revenues from Carrier Bag Charges
- Assoc Prof Jamus Jerome Lim asked whether revenues from carrier bag charges are received by the Ministry or retained by retailers, and if profits net of bag costs are designated for environmental transition programmes.
- Grace Fu Hai Yien explained that under the Resource Sustainability Act, large supermarket operators must charge at least five cents per disposable carrier bag and publish how the proceeds are used.
- The Government encourages operators to channel the proceeds to environmental or social causes, and all have indicated their intention to do so.
